The untitled fourth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, was released on November 8, 1971. It was remastered and re-released on vinyl in October 2014. With no title, the band chose a symbol each to represent their personal contribution to the album. These symbols became an identifiable representation for the band and are still utilised in merchandising today.
Containing Zeppelin’s most well renowned track “Stairway To Heaven”, the album was a commercial and critical success and is their best-selling, shipping over 37 million copies worldwide. It is one of the highest-selling albums in US history and critics have regularly placed it highly on lists of the greatest albums of all time.
A defining album of 70’s hard rock, the tracks encompass various styles including blues, heavy metal, folk and more traditional rock and roll. It has genuine impact which has endured the test of time and still emits a freshness that refutes its age. From clear vocals, impeccable riffs, inventive structures and an immense drum sound, it is easy to see why this album became the bands most admired piece of work.
Zeppelin were so far ahead of the rock game when releasing this album showing all their craft, fearlessness and infinite wisdom. This is evident in every song from the impossible timing displayed in the rhythmic swing of “Black Dog” to arguably one of the greatest guitar solos of all time placed after a legendary crescendo built from tranquil earthy flutes in “Stairway to Heaven”.
