‘American III: Solitary Man’ Is the third of Johnny Cash’s ‘American Recording’ series with producer Rick Rubin and is his penultimate album released while he was still alive.
The ‘American’ series is best known as his return to mainstream popularity, and for its emotive renditions of then-contemporary artists, accordingly ‘Solitary Man’ consists mainly of covers with a smattering of originals, the latter of which are all re-recordings from his extensive discography.
Highlights include Cash’s interpretation of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ ‘The Mercy Seat’ and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s ‘I See A Darkness’.
